A reception for long standing City Commissioner Tommy Johnson will be held Tuesday April 19th, to recognize Mr. Johnson's service to the community. Mr. Johnson decided not seek re-election in December, and to exit the commission this at the end of his three year term.
Mr. Johnson was first elected to the commission in 2007, and always kept a relative low profile on the commission, also know for being an advocate for city employees over the years. Mr. Johnson played a role in the construction of the new Safety Center in 2011.
One of the biggest and most important projects Mr. Johnson worked on was the completion of the new Safety Center, for police and fire. It was completed in 2011. This building was built to house the these departments for the next 50 years.
Mayor Brannon had this to say about Mr. Johnson upon completing his term of public service. "He's established his own legacy of service to the people." Mr. Brannon continued, "I hope his willingness to serve will causes others to plug into public service". Mr. Brannon also saluted Tommy Johnson's time as an employee of the city by saying, "I am grateful for his service not just as a Commissioner, but an employee too. Like his wife, longtime librarian, Ruth Ann Johnson."
There is no doubt that Tommy and Ruth Anne have been great contributors to the City of Cushing. whether as employees or through Tommy's service to the commission, their love for Cushing has been displayed.
Mr. Johnson's seat will be filled by Chad Short, who filed as a candidate on December 19th, 2015 and had no other opponent file. Therefor no election was held, for the open commission seat.
